30th Anniversary Product Lineup

Making Bikes Better Since 1995

We believe riding bikes makes life better, so we work to make bikes better.

Cane Creek was started 30 years ago by a group of riders who simply wanted to create better bike parts. The components that were born here in Fletcher have shaped an entire industry and continue to set standards today.

The Beginning

Japanese Brand Enters The US Market

The 1970s marked a major boom in American cycling thanks to the oil and gas crisis of the time. Looking to get closer to this expanding market, the Japanese component company Dia-Compe (well known for their bicycle brakes) decided to open a manufacturing facility just south of Asheville, NC. The facility was strategically placed in the small industrial town of Fletcher along rail lines that could easily access various parts of the central and eastern United States.

Dia-Compe broke ground on their new American factory in 1974 and erected the walls of the building that would eventually become the home of Cane Creek.

Production of bicycle parts inside the building began in 1975 - now 50 years ago - and still continues today.

Early Days

A Staple of American Manufacturing

This facility served as a critical hub of the American bike industry through the 70s and 80s, supplying popular bike manufacturers in America such as Schwinn, Raleigh, Huffy, and Murray.

It also was contracted to manufacture and assemble components for other brands, including one of the first production mountain bike suspension forks.

Dia-Compe USA

Becoming American-Owned

In 1989, the management in Fletcher would move to purchase the company away from the Japanese ownership establishing Dia-Compe USA as an American-owned and operated company. The most notable innovation to come out of this time period was the introduction of the threadless headset - perhaps one of the most influential bicycle technology patents of all time.

Dia-Compe USA manufactured and shipped the revolutionary Aheadset starting in 1992.

Aheadset: The Springboard

Introduction of the Threadless Headset

In 1992, Dia-Compe USA introduced the Aheadset, completely rewriting the playbook of how the front end of bicycles would go together. The basic design is used to this day.

Cane Creek

Birth of the Brand

Following the release of the ground-breaking Aheadset, it was decided that a new brand name was needed to celebrate the local origins of the new and innovative components coming out of Fletcher. Dia-Compe USA created the Cane Creek brand in 1995 for this very purpose.

Finding a name for this new premium line was simple; it was locally inspired by the mountain-fed creek that runs near the building. The first all-new product to bear the brand name was the novel and lightweight Air-Driver mountain bike shock.

Needless to say, the Cane Creek brand name stuck. It was simply too powerful to be left as a sub-division.

Within a year, Dia-Compe USA officially renamed itself Cane Creek Cycling Components

No stopping...

The legacy continues

In the last 30 years, we've expanded into nearly every segment of cycling and sought to improve the ride of just about every type of rider.

We’ve smoothed out rough roads with Thudbuster suspension seatposts. We developed the world’s first twin tube shocks for mountain bikes, expanding the range of external tunability offered to riders. We’re pushing expectations with our virtually indestructible eeWings titanium cranks. We’re making gravel riding better with Invert forks and eeSilk+ seatposts. We’re expanding the capabilities of mountain bikes with Tigon - one shock that does the work of two.

And we have no plans of stopping now.

Where it started...

The 6 components shown on this printed mailer from 1996 represent the first group of products to bear the Cane Creek brand name. While they all helped pave the way, three of them have descendants that we still make today.

Threadless Headsets

Aheadset | 110 Ceramic

The Aheadset was the world’s first threadless headset, introduced in 1992. It replaced the cumbersome threaded design and has easily become one of the most impactful bicycle patents of all time.

Threadless headsets based on the original patent are still found today on nearly every bicycle in the world, regardless of type or price.

Today, the 110 Ceramic marks the pinnacle of this evolution. With it’s ceramic bearings, robust weather seals and Interlok spacers, it’s the last headset a rider will need to buy. It’s covered by a 100% Lifetime Guarantee that’s based on 30 years of confidence in our ability to produce premium, lasting headsets.

Rim Brake Calipers

BRS 200 SL | eeBrakes, fourth generation

When Dia-Compe established business in Fletcher in 1975, brakes were the company’s flagship product. Our facility served as a critical hub of the American bike industry through the 70s and 80s, supplying brakes to popular bike manufacturers in America such as Schwinn, Raleigh, Huffy, and Murray.

The BRS 200 SL shown here was the first Cane Creek branded rim brake caliper, and perhaps the most direct link to our Dia-Compe heritage. At the time, it was the lightest road brake on the market. It offered good power and modulation at only 250g per pair. It even used some titanium hardware!

eeBrakes are one of the only premium options available today for those that cherish the lightweight simplicity of this traditional system. They’re one of lightest rim brake calipers ever made and are hand built here in house.

Mountain Bike Shocks

Air Driver | Tigon

The Air Driver (AD) shocks were air-sprung, pressure-damped shocks that offered a super lightweight and low maintenance appeal. They helped establish the presence of air shocks in the mountain bike market, showing how lightweight, adaptable, and tunable they could be. The AD-8 offered both compression and rebound adjustment purely by controlling the flow of air through the shock. The AD-4 was a simpler offering that cut even more weight by removing the external adjusters entirely.

Today, Tigon is the world’s only air-charged coil shock, combining the properties of both air and coil shocks to produce a better shock for trail and enduro riders. Typically, riders have had to choose the ground-hugging sensitivity of coil OR the tunable, ramping support of an air spring. Tigon gives you both. It represents a desire to push the capabilities of modern mountain bikes.
