How do you true Crono wheels?Crono wheels are designed to stay true longer than the best-built wire-spoked wheels. This is because of the straight spokes (no elbow bends), high uniform spoke tension, and Nylock-reinforced nipples
(which secure the threads).
But if truing adjustments become necessary, it's a simple job. A 3/16-inch open-end wrench (included with each wheelset) turns the nipples in much the same way as a conventional wheel—only at the hub. The hex nipples won't round out. And because of the fewer spokes, simpler crossing patterns, and higher tension, Crono wheels are actually easier and faster to true. Effectively, you get more impact with every turn of the spoke wrench.
There is a little learning curve to it, but truing a Crono wheel is intuitive and ultimately quicker than dealing with a conventional spoked wheel. One other thing about that 3/16-inch wrench: It's
common in U.S. hardware and auto-parts stores (same size as an ignition wrench).
Do Crono wheels need to be re-trued after a "break-in" period? With a conventional wire-spoked wheel, such "break-in" adjustments are usually necessary. What happens is that regardless of the tension, the J-bend spokes seat into the hub during the first few
rides, and the wheel loses its perfect trueness.
With a Crono wheel, the superior design negates the causes of this break-in out-of-trueness. There are no J-bend spokes, the spoke tension is very high, and the nipples have a thread-securing insert.
Every Crono wheel is hand-built every step of the way. When it leaves our wheelbuilding room, the wheel is perfectly true and pre-stressed. You can ride it without having to worry about the normal break-in period of conventional wheels.
How easy is it to get replacement spokes? The Crono wheels use straight-pull spokes. These are not one-off or custom spokes or sizes. Most spoke makers produce straight-pull spokes. So any decent bike shop in many parts of the world can get you a Crono replacement spoke, should you find yourself needing one.
Some Crono wheels use deep-section rims. If these are heavier, what is the advantage of using them?
It is true that a deeper rim section adds weight compared to a more conventional rim profile. But the extra strength of the deeper rim section enables the wheel to use fewer (and lighter) spokes and still
be plenty strong. Using fewer spokes—as few as 18 on deep-section Crono track wheels—saves some weight and gives a slight aerodynamic Edge. Some riders also report that the deep-section Crono wheels give a firmer ride, due to the stiffer rim profile.
Can I replace the rim on my Crono wheels with another rim?Generally, no. If it is a matter of substituting a Crono rim with another brand of rim, there is no way. Crono rims have a small custom drilling in the rim wall, and no other rim will do. As for replacing
a Crono rim with another kind of Crono rim, it may not be an easy switch, because the spoke lengths are different per wheel, as are the number of spokes for many models.
Really, the answer to this question is another question: Why would you want to replace a Crono rim? If it is for a crash replacement, please refer to the FAQ for that type of incident. If it is merely an attempt to upgrade, you're much better off choosing the right Crono wheel in the first place. The integrity and distinction of the Crono design are more significant than differences from rim to rim.
What is the warranty policy on Crono wheels? We take care of the customer. All of us ride and we all realize what a bummer it is to have something go wrong and be without equipment that works. So we make durable components, and we back them up with responsive customer service.
The Cane Creek warranty is one year on parts in the event of manufacturer defect. We also offer a crash-replacement program for wheels. If your Crono wheel is tweaked out, we advise you to take it
to a bike shop (preferably the one you purchased it from). The shop can perform a rebuild or send it to us. We will replace the spokes and rim if necessary at a cost that is dependant upon the wheel model and spokes used. We also check the hub, so the wheel you get back is like new.
Keep in mind that our main interest with replacing damaged wheels is getting you back in business as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Of course, we hope and expect that you will never have a
problem with your Crono wheels, but we know crashes happen, and we handle your needs with the utmost in speed and care.
