The Double Barrel’s unique All-Speed Damping and 4-Way Independent Adjustment would not be possible without another unique technological advantage: Twin Tube design.

Twin Tube technology circulates oil continuously through the valving to achieve highly controllable, independent damping for both compression and rebound strokes. This unique valving has a significant affect due to the fact it is continuously acting on the oil pumped through the circulating system.

On the trail, that translates into a performance edge you can feel with increased control and stability. And as control and stability increase, so does speed.

The Double Barrel uses a unique Twin Tube design.

  • Unique in industry: it totally isolates the rebound circuits from the compression circuits.
  • Twin Tube flows more oil through adjustable valves (instead of piston valves) giving you more control.
  • Oil moves through the piston only as directed by the external adjusters. In other words, the rider dictates how much oil will be routed through each valve.

Other shocks are a compromise, many times over

Because the Double Barrel is the most advanced cycling rear shock available, it exposes the weaknesses of our competitor's shocks: They always push the same amount of oil through the same valves. This places a huge limitation on adjustability, as you are always dealing with the same amount of oil. Disadvantages include:

  • Oil displaced by the shaft moves through valves between the shock body and the reservoir.
  • The rest of the oil is routed through the piston valves.
  • Larger shafts are required to get more oil through reservoir valves. This has multiple disadvantages:
  • increased unsprung weight and poorer high frequency performance
  • larger shafts mean larger seals = more seal drag
  • the larger flow into the reservoir requires a larger reservoir (more weight).
However, most shocks have seriously too small reservoirs, so that the compressed air acts as a spring.

Moreover, other shocks must use higher pressure in the reservoir to prevent bubbles from forming, also known as cavitation. Because pressure only acts on one face of a piston, the resulting pressure differences make most shocks prone to cavitation.

The Double Barrel pressurizes both sides of the piston, which reduces the pressure differential. This allows it to utilize a lower system pressure to prevent cavitation. And lower pressure also means lighter seals, and less seal drag.

Other shocks’ reservoir pressure is a poor adjustment: akin to a band aid. Their reservoir pressure has crossover effects on all adjustments (high- and low-speed compression, high- and low-speed rebound). The Double Barrrel doesn’t need this band aid because of its unique Twin Tube technology.
