Middle of Nowhere: Checking in with Chris Figureida

Recently we caught up with Chris Figureida, who is cycling across the US to raise awareness about childhood obesity and heart disease.  About one month into his jorney, Chris found himself in the mythical "middle of nowhere."

I finally found the "middle of nowhere" and it was everything that I expected - ugly brown and dried out weeds, stretching for as far as my eye could see. Interesting, in this land of nothing. I happen to come up on two other people. And who else would be found wondering through this part of the world, but other touring cyclist. These two guys were from New York. And very close to reaching Portland. Like every other touring cyclist, they were very impressed with my lightweight set up and minimal gear.

BikeRadar Shines Positive Light on Thudbuster

 Thudbuster LT Thudbuster ST

The Thudbuster seatpost earns praise everywhere it goes — even online and in other countries. BikeRadar.com, recently had good things to say in a test of both versions of the Thudbuster (ST and LT).

The reviews call the Thudbuster ST (short travel) “well-engineered comfort aid for longer or bumpier rides" and say the Thudbuster LT (long travel) “performs beautifully.”

BikeRadar.com

The description of the LT succinctly articulates the Thudbuster advantage in a distinctly British way:  “This post works so well that we found ourselves forgetting that we weren't on a full suspension bike. It soaks up small-to-medium hits without complaint, and it's only when you stand up and are suddenly plonked back on your hardtail again without any arse-saving squish that you appreciate exactly how well this post works on the trail.”

KBS/Medifast Storms to Tour Title

Tour de Pennsylvania Win

Veilleux and Keven Lacombe Take First Overall and Second in Stage Six of Tour of PA; Severe Weather Shuts Down Stage Six

Not even a tornado warning and severe weather on the streets of downtown Pittsburgh voiding the final stage of the Tour of Pennsylvania yesterday could dampen the mood of Jonas Carney and the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast team. After a week that saw a KBS/M athlete on every podium of every stage, the team took the overall win as well as second place in the stage.

When a tornado warning halted the stage for 20 minutes and several crashes on the rain-slicked brick surface of Grant Street both slowed the race and made conditions difficult, officials made the call that the stage would not count toward the overall Tour placings. David Veilleux, ahead by 12 seconds after Saturday's impressive stage five win took the overall with team mate Keven Lacombe coming in second on the discounted final stage.

"Despite the weather conditions Sunday this is a tremendous win for our young guys," says performance director Jonas Carney. "They followed the team plan all week and sacrificed for each other in every stage. I couldn't be more proud of them."

KBS/Medifast Snatch Two Jerseys at Tour de Nez

Tour de Nez

Bajadali Takes GC Lead; Bowman Sets Him Up and Takes KOM

It's not just defending champion Alex Candelario who came back to Nevada to lay it all down at the Tour de Nez. Teammates Dan Bowman and Andrew Bajadali of Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast pulled off a huge day between them yesterday, Stage 4, when Bowman secured the King of the Mountains jersey and Bajadali took second place and the overall GC lead.

Climbing hard during Stage 4, which snaked through the Northstar resort near Lake Tahoe, California, Bowman was among an early breakaway that lasted most of the race. He locked up the King of the Mountain jersey and set up Bajadali for an attempt at the win. Bajadali's move came late in the race when he bridged alone to the break, chasing Eric Wohlberg of Symmetrics in front and holding off Scott Nydam of BMC to take second place. The time bonus for second and the lead on the rest of the field gave Bajadali the overall GC lead.

"Today was a great day for our team," says performance director, Jonas Carney. "Bowman did an awesome job of setting up Baj and in the process came away with the King of the Mountains jersey. Nobody is celebrating yet though. The Tour de Nez is a hard race with a lot of competition. Tomorrow will be tough to defend."

Double Victory for Veilleux at Nature Valley Grand Prix

David Veilleux Wins Stillwater Stage Six and Best Young Rider; Team Takes Second in Overall GC

David Veilleux Wins Stillwater Stage Six

Second year pro David Veilleux, 20, showed the seasoned riders of the peloton exactly why they can get used to chasing his back wheel after snatching a double victory at the Nature Valley Grand Prix in Minnesota. Veilleux (CAN), one of the youngest members of the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast pro cycling team, took the Nature Valley Grand Prix's Best! Young Rider Jersey at the Minneapolis Downtown Classic and then the stage six win in Stillwater Sunday. Stillwater is arguably the most brutal stage of any race in North America today.

Veilleux came from behind with a surprise sprint to pass Rory Sutherland (Healthnet-Maxxis), the overall winner, and Ricardo Escuela (Successful Living) after consistent attempts by Veilleux, Dan Bowman and Andrew Bajadali (including a solo attack 300 meters out) failed to deliver the winning breakaway.

"This is a big — and well deserved win — for David," says performance director, Jonas Carney. "We've been working on a win all week with Alex Candelario's second place in Cannon Falls, and all of our guys have been aggressive in every stage." We knew when we added David to the roster at the end of last year that he was going to do great things and it's very rewarding to see that happening."

Geritt Beytagh Wins Mount Snow

Congratulations again to Geritt Beytagh, who won the Pro Men's Mount Snow race in East Dover, Vermont. The rain and mud-slick conditions momentarily sent Beytagh off course, but he recovered quickly and completed the course in 3:41.8, followed by Benjamin Moody in 3:43.9. Chris Higgerson took third with 3:44.3.
